Xavier Esqueda

Xavier Esqueda:  was born in Mexico City in 1943. A self-taught painter, he studied architecture for two years at the Univ. La Salle and attended the ceramics workshop of the painter and sculptor Juan Soriano in 1961, with whom he established a lasting friendship.

His early career achievements and visible artistic quality earned him, at age 28, the artist-in-residence scholarship at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States; an award that two distinguished Mexicans previously received: José Clemente Orozco, who was commissioned to create the murals in the library of said Institution, and Carlos Chávez, who was a resident musician.

From a very early age he began to exhibit in prestigious spaces, such as the legendary Antonio Souza Gallery (1965), the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City (1966) and the Byron Gallery in NY (1966). He had a presence, from 1967, in the now defunct Galería Universitaria Aristas with the exhibition Surrealism and fantastic art in Mexico. That same year he participated in the Youth Biennale in Paris, France. The following year he appeared for the second time at the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts, this time with the Solar Exhibition, an exhibition that earned him the Fine Arts Prize in painting.

His active work in the exhibition spaces of Mexico alternated with individual and group exhibitions in international venues: Havana, Cuba; London England; Montreal and Ottawa in Canada; Houston, Miami, St. Francisco and Pittsburg in the United States are just some of the places that have exhibited his work since the 1970s.
